Paul Johnson interview

From Interview:

I had one particular coach (Coach Bud Foster VT) who called me who had really pounded them at home in Atlanta and he told me, Paul it is a circus and he goes I told my kids after the game in the locker room, he said congratulations, you just beat a team that physically had kicked our ass for the last three years and he goes, I am just not saying that to you. When we got through with those games, he said it was hard for us to play the next week because of the physicality and the way you played.

CPJ beat VT in 2016, 2017, 2018... VT smoked Goof Collins 45-0 in 2019... Circus was in town - Sad part is that AD TStan, Pat Swilling, John Dewberry, and a whole host of others really thought Paul Johnson was the problem & Clown Collins was the Savior! This is great interview and gives great insight on how not only Paul Johnson has been treated but the former players who represented GT in two Orange Bowls were treated!

So glad that the new AD J. Batt is moving to corporate sponsorships!

We did recruit smaller athletic lineman. Shaq mason was short; I think Parker Braun weighed 285. None of them were ever 6’1 260 though, much less an average of the bunch
Who was the converted TE in 2008? He was about 260. I think he started, but I know he played a lot.

Who was the team that lined up in the Flexbone as they were whopping Goof Collins A$$????
I remember this but I don’t remember which game. I ‘ve tried to block those years out of my memory

Brad Sellers, David Brown and Austin Barrick were all converted tight ends that played tackle for us. Barrick actually moved to AB, then moved to tackle. Sellers (#60) is probably the smaller guy you remember. He played LT on the 09 team and was very good about getting out into space quickly.

PJ called for an overhand lateral to Barrick in the 08 comeback at Athens on third and long and Barrick pulled up just short of the marker, in preparation for a hit, rather than going forward, and we didn't get the first down and had to settle for a field goal. PJ ripped him a new one on the sidelines after that too. Put us up 38-28

I sat in a box with Pat Swilling during the Northern Illinois debacle. Didn't say how well I knew PJ or discuss the utter disdain I already had for Clown at that point.
We had the decency and discretion to vent later at the GT Hotel bar. And on our walk over there.
But we were ready to say, "this is what you got us!" to Pat and TStan at that point. We were pretty livid, as was everyone else, but I kept my mouth shut. Didn't want to start a fight in the box with Pat Swilling. I would very much have liked to live to see another day.

There's another clip from that game, early fourth quarter, around 12 minutes to go maybe. Collins asks for a spot, the refs tell him to get back and he shucks and jives backs to the sidelines with his tongue wagging out like it's a big joke.
We're getting beat 45-0.
At home.
To a team we'd just beaten three straight times and who we had just ripped a new one the year before.
And he's yukking it up with the refs.
That was the point of no return for me. I was wholly done with Clown at that point. Because that was the most Clown thing I'd ever witnessed from a coach in a game.

Other than Clown, the second biggest joke of his whole reign of error was the S&C hire. We didn't get stronger and faster. We got weaker and slower. But boy did he make great inspirational videos.
Of the many things Coach Key had to fix in the aftermath, that was one of the first items on his list, which tells you something.
