Expansion

That’s really not accurate at all. Clemson is a national brand that resonates with drawing significant TV #’s. Clemson was #10 at 2.59 M as far average watched per game for the 2022 season. The state of SC viewership is only a small piece to the puzzle. FSU was #15. Not really sure why some people on here (not saying you in particular) have this myth that Clemson, FSU bring nothing to the SEC table, but it’s simply not true.

That is the point I am making. Clemson isn’t like FSU in that they bring in money based on the state population. GT, UVa, and uNC fall into this category which is important to the B1G.

Clemson and FSU have broad out of state appeal. So Clemson is a different animal with respect to expansion than the other ACC schools.

As for the SEC, Clemson absolutely hurts USC and uGa recruiting. So they would need to appeal to other schools based on $. Same with FSU.

Miami and FSU dominated CFB for a few decades. Miami should own the talent in South Florida.
They used to split it about equally with FSU. Now with all the IMGs and the like, everyone has their hand in South Florida.

This current state of conferences and expansion isn’t where it was for the rest of the history of the sport tho. You can recruit against these schools in conference or you can recruit against them in a B1G branded as the national conference. Pick your poison.

You realize Clemson has been a “relevant“ national brand for going on 15+ years, right? The current players / younger generation have all grown up knowing only the brand that Clemson is now. The opposite of FSU all things considered. FSU was good in 2013 (NC) 2014 (CFP) but from 2015-2021 was a train wreck with the end of Fisher to Taggart and the 1st 2 years under Norvell.

It’s not the 1990’s anymore.

Clemson is the #1 brand in the ACC over FSU right now. How many half empty stadium blowouts on National TV with a professor reading in the stands has Clemson had on their home field that you can remember over the last 15 years? Flip side, FSU has had a few at the hands of Clemson, Miami, NCSU, Wake, GT 2020, and the FCS loss.
These things change. We'll see where CU ends up, but when they are not winning, they are not a big national draw, much like most teams not named Notre Dame.

No they don’t. Did you not read the link posted? Clemson was #10 in 2022 with an average TV audience of 2.59M. FSU was #15 with an average of 2.03M.
This is one data point. It was likely true for the last 6 years while CU was good and FSU stunk. However, that is changing. FSU is waxing and CU is waning at present. We’ll have to wait to see how it turns out, but CU is sitting at 0-2 in conference play today.

Take a look at the number of viewers from last years FSU/UF and FSU/Okla bowl games.

Saw this youtube video posted on SEC rant. Discusses our exit from the SEC, starting around 5:15 mark. Bark Madly cites the same source (Ginn) mentioned in the video in a 2014 column.

Also saw this archived NYT article titled Georgia Tech Quits Conference to Escape Limit on Athletic Scholarships; COLLEGE OBJECTS TO CEILING OF 140; Georgia Tech, Southeastern Member for 33 Years, to Be an Independent from the day after GT president Edwin Harrison announced our departure. The NYT headline is misleading as it suggests we wanted to "escape limits". The 6-6 vote where Bryant was a no-show was apparently the 1963 annual meeting. Dodd apparently lobbied Harrison to go independent after the 1963 meeting. We played the 1963 season as an SEC member after the 6-6 vote. Harrison reportedly went into the 1964 annual meeting with an ultimatum to drop the 140 rule or we were out. Harrison abstained from the vote at that meeting, which went 11-0 to retain the 140 limit but reduce the cap on yearly football recruits from 45 to 35. In any case, Harrison announced our departure from the SEC on Jan 24 1964, not in 1963.

That NYT article's behind a paywall. If someone subscribes to NYT and wants to paste the content here (or maybe @coit can work some link magic) would be a good public service.

Here's a link that should work.

Clemson starts losing they get more nooner kickoffs. GT starts winning GT gets more prime time kickoffs. Clemson's viewership goes down. GT's goes up.

Thank you. The issue was scholarship limits and the practice of running off players. With scholie limits a school that ran off players had an advantage. Dodd wouldn’t do it feeling that he had made a commitment to the player and his family for an education regardless of how good a player he turned out to be. Others, notably Bear Bryant, disagreed. The conference was split on the issue and Bryant was supposed to back Dodd, but he missed the meeting and the UA President voted against Dodd. It’s all detailed in the book, “Dodd’s Luck.”

Then look at the UT/CU Orange Bowl. It’s hard to believe so many people watch when two teams with high viewership play each other in a football game.
