Too soon to pull the plug on CPJ

I'm not going to necrobump, but if you go back to 2013 you'll see the same stuff. The sky is falling, we'll never be a good team now that Gailey's players are gone, we're mediocre at best, etc. It's all just overreacting, and 2014 unequivocally proved that. The present situation is no different. Last year was an injury-caused outlier and we've just returned to being what we've been throughout Johnson's whole tenure: a good team who wins 10/11 games with good luck and 6/7 with bad luck. So far the bad luck has outweighed the good, but that's life. I still think we end up 7-5 and bowl-bound if we beat the teams that we should and lose to the ones that are better than us. But you never know - we might get some lucky bounces.

It's never as good or as bad as it seems.
If you look back, i gave him a pass for last year, with a new QB next year i dont see any reason to believe we will be better than 6 or at best 7 wins. We are being left behind by the Dukes, VA and the Pitts. If thats all we can hope for how could it get worse with a change.

If thats all we can hope for how could it get worse with a change.
Just changing the coach won't fix anything. Johnson has basically the same overall record as all the previous coaches, excluding Lewis, including Ross.

We have a new AD who understands Tech.

Give the man some time to take stock and decide what is best for our program.

I'm not convinced that CPJ has forgotten how to coach. Something is obviously not right but I'm not sure its Paul Johnson.

I was at the Pitt game and the players played their butts off and were obviously prepared for the game. We were an inch away from winning today. You don't fire a coach over a freaking inch.

When we show up and get curb stomped because the team is not prepared and/or not motivated to win then I'll be first in line with a pitchfork but that has not happened this season. And, no, Clemson doesn't count.

I was here for Curry's first two years. I was here for Ross' first two years. I was here for B*** freakin' L***. I was here for 51-7. I'm satisfied with a kick-ass year every 8 years because I think that is pretty much as good as anyone not named Alabama can have.

You guys want to ditch CPJ? Name one coach that we have a hope in hell of getting who is a better coach. UGa just fired a 10-win coach and replaced him with an 8-win coach.

Oh, and for all you Tom Herman groupies, he just lost to Navy because he could not prepare his team to defend the triple option. Maybe we can pick up Tom Herman after Houston fires him for losing to a team that runs our offense.

The problem is not Coach Johnson's Offense, I think it was the recruiting efforts before Ted Roof/Mike Pelton came on board...(Al Groh) Lets take a look at 2012/2013 recuiting classes that happened before Ted Roof came to the flats and 2014-2016 since Ted Roof. This is why CPJ says we are young, becuase we are and also alot of our Recuits have been dismissed/Quit or medical, so it makes it tough when the 2012-13 classes are gutted and they are the leaders or are suppose to be leaders.. We are young, but we are getting better every week.

Also when you add in the transfers of OL E. Froyman, AB JJ Green and DB Lamont Simmons, I can not but help see a huge diff between DC Ted Roof and his recruiting talents compared to the guys before him. What does this mean? the 2017 season will be the first season of four years of Ted Roof recruiting. (He has helped reopen Atlanta market, LA, FLA, Carolinas and Tenn, We are not recruiting the Washington DC, Maryland markets as much since Groh left) We are young and that the 2017 ,18 and 19 seasons should be fun years for the folks who would like us to be in the hunt for 9-1o win seasons ACC titles..

This is good stuff, thanks for posting, GTFLETCH.

Unbelievably how much attrition we had in last couple years. No doubt that is a big part of what is holding us back right now.

Under Coach Johnson the 2011-2013 classes has taken more hits then 2008, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016 classes have.... I think that is why we are so young on the field. It is hard to overcome it, and yes I think the overall depth of talent is improving with the 2014 classes and on and that is directly related to Ted Roof recuiting efforts.

I am not discounting that offhand, just pointing out the obvious

We missed giff smith a lot early on! Still do imo

So, help me out, how many of these guys were recruited as defensive players? And, what is the percentage split between defense and offense? Also, how many strictly defensive linemen were recruited? And, how about rush ends?

I think it is safe to say that the triple option is functional. What may bother me a bit is does it appeal to young kids that are looking to be NFL stars.
I love Coach Johnson but it could be a conversation needed. He ran the run and shoot at Hawaii with June Jones. That offense certainly would have NFL appeal.
Hawaii is a tough place to recruit as well. The run and shoot is a bit of a gimmick too. The run and shoot requires an exceptional quarterback. In the triple option one
can recruit the Justin's of the world, good college talent not NFL talent. In the Run and Shoot I need an NFL talent. Right now it appears to me that our biggest deficiency is not
the offense but the defense. We have not recruited a Derrick Morgan or a Greg Gathers or a Phillip Wheeler or a Daryl Smith in a long while. We need a game changer on defense.

Bill Lewis ran the run and shoot also. And, he came in and took a team that won the National Championship and decided that the run and shoot would work best. So, he completely changed the offense because that is what he decided would be best. He never modified his approach to fit the players he had. But, he was a relatively nice guy to talk to - not an once of arrogance.

The 2012 and 2013 classes were not very good, and that is hurting us pretty bad right now. That is where our senior leadership and most experienced players should be coming from. and it's nonexistent in some areas. We've got younger guys beating out older guys all around, and that's not a recipe for success at places like GT. The good news is that I think classes have gotten progressively better since then, and our last couple classes have been pretty good. The class 0f 2017 looks good as well, if we can just get some momentum to expand it.
