A Florida State University starting football player was charged early Saturday after he kicked and tried to punch Tallahassee police officers outside a local nightclub.

Bobby Meeks - a 6-foot-4, 290-pound offensive lineman for FSU - was charged with battery on law-enforcement officers and resisting arrest with violence. Both charges are felonies. Police said they also had to use pepper spray and a stun gun on Meeks.

Meeks, 23, was released on $7,500 bail, according to the county's Justice Information System. A man police identified as Meeks' uncle, 34-year-old Albert Meeks Jr., also was charged with battery in the fight with officers.

The Meeks incident took place outside Chubby's nightclub on West Tennessee Street. Here's what happened, according to police reports:

At 2:10 a.m., after the club had closed, TPD Officer George Creamer Jr. asked Albert Meeks to leave; Meeks was still hanging out in the parking lot.

Albert Meeks at first refused, then got in his car when Creamer said he would be arrested on a trespassing charge. Bobby Meeks then began "cursing and challenging me to a fight," Creamer said.

Albert Meeks then came from behind Creamer and shoved him. As other officers tried to arrest him, his nephew was told to "back up," police said. When he didn't, TPD Officer David Stith pushed him back into a parked car.

The younger Meeks shoved Stith and swung his right fist at him, missing his face. Creamer then used pepper spray on Meeks, and Stith also punched him in the face.

Creamer tackled Meeks, who kicked yet another officer while he was down. Police finally subdued Meeks with a Taser stun gun. His uncle also was shot with a Taser.

Meeks, a senior from Aldine, Texas, started nine games last season as tight guard, including the Seminoles' Orange Bowl defeat to Miami. He missed two games because of a shoulder injury.

A player charged with a felony cannot play until the charge is resolved, according to FSU Athletic Department policy. Players report for practice Aug. 8.

Head coach Bobby Bowden is out of town, returning Monday. In an interview last week, he remarked on the quiet offseason, adding, "You still can't be naive enough to think that it might not happen tomorrow.

"You just have to be ... thankful your players have done the right things," he said. "Every time you look at the paper, somebody is in trouble."

With Saint Bobby calling the shots the police officer will probably be charged.
