Official GT Head Coach News Thread

For whatever it's worth, not much, I was heavily against Collins knew he was a snake oil salesman from the start.

I have liked how Key has handled himself. I especially liked how he handled Sims. He didn't throw him under the bus, states things as accurately and diplomatically as possible. He seems to know his craft and works hard to improve it.

Time will tell if he will be successful, but he has a heck of a better shot at being successful vs. the used car salesman.

Remember the first play of the spring game from Colin's first year? They started on an option set then moved out to a shotgun formation and ran the play.

For the first play in the upcoming spring game I want the sideline players holding the money down signs and lifting weights, and then I want the play to stop, a garbage truck to come onto the field and the players proceed to throw all that öööö away.

@OlearyLookAlike make it happen.

Will the turf also fit in said garbage truck?

Be even better if it was this truck.

If it turns out to be Key...

Positives:
  • He actually looks and acts like a football coach, a notable change from the previous regime.
  • He should be (although you never know with GT) an inexpensive hire, allowing us to hopefully spend the next couple of years digging ourselves out of a financial hole, allowing more flexibility if he doesn't work out.
  • While I don't love the "Tech Man" rationale, I do appreciate having a guy that loves GT at the helm. (This is a plus if he turns out to be competent, but shouldn't be a deciding factor in his hiring, IMHO.)
  • He got some nice wins under adverse circumstances during his tenure.
Negatives:
  • The association with the"stink" of the previous regime remains. We'll see how much he beats it out of the players and cleans it out of the staff.
  • Not a lot of experience, and performance in higher roles at other schools (e.g., UCF OC) has been mixed.
  • Feels like a letdown/last resort when we were hoping for some kind of splash. The extent to which this is true will likely never be known, as it depends on who else we tried to hire and why it didn't work out.
  • He had some bad losses (admittedly under adverse circumstances) during his tenure.
  • There was a lot of luck involved in his wins (turnovers, critical drops), things that are not predictable or sustainable. While a competent team makes some of its own luck, regression to the mean would say that we'd lose most of those wins next year, all else being equal.
Overall, not too exciting, but maybe an opportunity to upgrade some assistants, right the ship (I'd expect a bowl game next year with games against TBD cupcake, Bowling Green, BC, Syracuse, @UVA, Louisville, @Wake, @Miami, UNC), and allow us to get our finances straight.

I'd also include that despite the final score, with Key at the helm, our guys gave it their all against the mighty gaggers. No way that would have ever happened if Gef were still leading the troops.

This is definitely different than what we have been hearing. According to this, the players advocated for Key. J Batt wanted Fritz/BOB and the donors wanted Chadwell. Apparently, the players threatening to leave won out.
There is one definite in the above scenario. You gotta have competent Jimmy's and Joe's that can play. Without 'em you don't have shat.

That's exactly how Texas A&M got Jimbo Fisher. It turns out that even if you're confident in your ability to identify talent, it's easy to get it wrong.

Thus, if your AA is already struggling financially, it's smart to go for a serviceable hire you can afford than to mortgage everything going for broke with a home run hire who might not work out. Then you take a few years, get your finances in order, and if Key doesn't work out you're in a position where you can afford to take a risk on a bigger name who needs a lot of guaranteed money.

No one is saying never take a risk on guaranteeing money for a big name coach ever again. They're just saying don't do it while your AA is already on financial life support.
Is there really such a thing as a home run hire? As best as I can tell, only time will tell.
