Stumpy Thomason
Has Narrow Escape
With Wild Bear
The bear which was presented to
Stumpy Thomason by an admiring fan
after the Georgia Tech victory over
the University of California New
Year's Day is attracting attention
from outside sources.
Last Saturday morning, a Fox Movietone
cameraman visited the campus
and took pictures of Stumpy playing
with his new little pet. He also wished
to get a picture of the Little Giant
taking Bruin into one of the classrooms,
but members of the faculty
objected to this so strenuously that
this feature was ruled out.
The next day Stumpy took the bear
around to a fraternity house to let it
show some of the stunts it had learned.
All went well until Stumpy started
a wrestling match. The bear suddenly
grabbed a hand hold on Stumpy
with his claws. That ended the show
for the afternoon. Aided by an Atlanta
cop, who happened to be passing at
the right place at the right time, the
onlookers finally subdued the bear.
Stumpy made a dash for medical assistance
and after having three
stitches taken in his hand, went noire
with the injured member in a sling.

his now famous bear had callers. Jim
crawley was trying to get the bear to
show off for the company and ran to
a tree in the yard which had been topped
and started climbing it, hoping to
induce the bear to climb. The bear,
naturally, caught the idea but he also
caught jim part the way up the tree.
Jim thought the idea of being up a
tree trunk which had no limbs on
which he might retreat not so good,
but he thought the idea of backing
down into the mouth of the bear not
even that good, so he proceeded to ascend
the tree with unbelievable facility,
followed closely by the bear. Upon
the abbreviated crown of the tree jim
jumped from side to side, the menacing
paw of bruin making lighteninglike
passes at him and frequently engaging
with his breeches. There jim
pranced and dodged and screamed,
and there hung the bear, growling
and making pieces of breeches rain
down like feathers at a pillow fight.
Presently the bear, becoming tired
of holding on with three feet, descended
to the ground, settled himself at
the base of the tree and played possum.
Jim watched for an opportune
moment and commenced descending.
When he got about half way down,
the bear suddenly sprang up the tree
and jim climbed in a few jumps back
to his perch at the top of the tree.
After going through this procedure
several times, someone managed to
get the bear to playing on the other
side of the yard and jim quickly slid
down the tree and made for the safety
of his room, vowing to never again
try to make the bear show off.

I think at one time Stumpy's bear lived under the stands at Grant Field.

Thanks for the video, Cyp. I'd heard about Stumpy's bear even before starting at Tech, but I'd only seen stills.
