I was living out of state when it happened, but wasn't SAC leveled, and CRC built where it had been? What's there now doesn't even resemble SAC on the outside.

From what I remember, they didn't level the SAC completely, more like expanded it. Probably several partial demolishing here and there. Wikipedia has some info:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgia...reation_Center

As far as the olympic pool goes, it stayed intact and I am pretty sure SAC expanded to cover it. I miss using the olympic pool in outside atmosphere even in relatively cool weather. I hate the chlorine smell in indoor pools.

In the spirit of this thread:
FIRE HEWITT!

I think the major renovations were for the 1996 Olympics. There was a renovation after that, IIRC. But like I said, I was living in another state at the time. That pic looks nothing like the old SAC. They may have called it SAC, but I don't see much that appears to still be there. Then again, looks can be deceiving.

Picture is the CRC after all renovations, even the solar cells are in place. From reading wikipedia, it sounds like, they got rid of the SAC roof, built a much higher roof that also covered the olympic pool and then suspended the 4th floor courts from the roof. My guess is they also expanded the base area a bit.

You know, I really just need to walk through the thing, and I could tell you. I hope that's what happened. It would mean there's one place I hung out a lot (other than BDS... which was only Grant Field then) that's still there. That would be strangely good.

Aren't some of the dorms and classroom buildings remaining from then? Some definitely looked that old.

I was referring to the SAC to CRC renovations. Above is a pic of the current CRC just after it reopened in 2004

I find it hilarious that this thread was started before the fiasco of the last 5 minutes of the game...
