Default Untimed down???

I have tried to figure this out last night, but still bothering me. Can anyone explain to me why we had an untimed down at the end of the 1st quarter? I just must be ignorant about that rule. The personal foul was a dead ball foul, as the ball was down when Thomas hit the guy. And we were on offense. So can someone show me where in the rules why we got an untimed down? It was not a live ball foul, imo, and we were on offense, so I cannot figure this one out.

A quarter can't end on a dead-ball penalty, unless you're Alabama

So if your team is down by 4 at the end of a game (or end of a half), and your guy gets tackled, why not commit a personal foul to go back 15 yards -- but keep the game going one more play? I thought the rule only applied to defense on that.

Here's the rule on untimed downs from the 2009-2010 NCAA Football Rules:

Quote:
Extension of Periods
ARTICLE 3. a. A period shall be extended for an untimed down (other than a try) if during a down in which time expires one or more of the following occurs (A.R. 3-2-3-I-VIII):
1. A penalty is accepted for a live-ball foul(s) not treated as a dead-ball foul (Exception: Rule 10-2-5-a). The period is not extended if the statement of the penalty includes loss of down (A.R. 3-2-3-IX).
2. There are offsetting fouls.
3. An official sounds his whistle inadvertently or otherwise incorrectly signals the ball dead.
b. Additional untimed downs (other than a try) will be played until a down is free of the circumstances in statements 1, 2 and 3 of Rule 3-2-3-a (above).
It seems that the untimed down was conducted in error.

Thanks ND. So I guess they were treating the PF as an live ball foul. I thought it was a dead ball, as the play had stopped.

The ACC refs are finally cheating for us. It's good to be on top.

It was a personal foul, not dead ball personal foul.

This.

But if it was during the play, why was it a penalty?
