In 1999 (Roof):
93rd in Scoring Defense at 30.3 ppg 100th in Total Defense at 413.8 ypg In 2000 (Roof): 21st in Scoring Defense 19.0 ppg 70th in Total Defense 379.6 ypg In 2001 (Roof): 37th in Scoring Defense 22.3 ppg 32nd in Total Defense 333.3 ypg In 2002 (Tenuta): 27th in Scoring Defense 20.5 ppg 30th in Total Defense 355.7 ypg In 2003 (Tenuta): 27th in Scoring Defense 20.5 ppg 20th in Total Defense 322.2 ypg In 2004 (Tenuta): 21st in Scoring Defense 18.9 ppg 12th in Total Defense 297.9 ypg Roof really turned our defense around after a really poor year in his 1st season as DC. I think people have a tendency to let 1999 overshadow some pretty good years in 2000 and 2001. If we are not able to keep Tenuta, I think that Roof would be a pretty good choice. |

To his credit Ted was not wanted by Gailey.

I think at this point Ted would be a great choice for LB position coach. Would love to see he and Glen back but don't know if it's going to happen.

Let Teddy stay in NC, and away from our D. He cost us several games in his last season here with O'Leary.

Never happen. I do see him and Glen coaching HS ball and probably doing very well at it.

IIRC, Ted was offered the LB coach position by Gailey, but he turned it down.

I have all the respect in the world for Ted Roof and I also think he may have gotten the short end of the goody wagon.
For a man to come out of college after being a top quality athlete as he, and start as DC so early, and under G.O'L. may have been a little premature. I don't know how much of his coaching came from his personal football knowledge or how much came from having to do exactly as G.O'L. told him to do. In TR's defense, I thought in time, he would make a great DC, but the title came too early. As far as him being a HC, that too may have come too early. TR's Future: I do hope he doesn't get discouraged and give up on coaching, because TR has too much knowledge and experience for the young college athlete to miss out on. His future at GT as a coach: I wouldn't mind one bit seeing him come back to GT to coach, (matter of fact, I'd like to see him back at GT), but this time as a position coach. Then possibly moving back up the ladder, but TR just needed more seasoning before being pushed up to HC. |
