There's actually an option on his contract for 2013. The option becomes guaranteed if he plays 123 games in 2012. He played 126 games in 2011.

Salary:

$9 million if he plays 123+ games in 2012
$10 million if he plays 128+ games in 2012
$11 million if he plays 133+ games in 2012
$12 million if he plays 138+ games in 2012
$13 million if he plays 140+ games in 2012

If he fails to play 123 games, there's a club option for $7 million with no buyout.

Chipper will most likely restructure his guaranteed payout for 2013 over a multi-year span to help alleviate cap room.

If he voluntarily walks away from the contract, he forfeits the option. I was only pointing out he doesn't HAVE to retire (it's not like his contract is up and the Braves informed him that he's not getting another). Also, not that this would happen, but he can't pull a Farve and play for another team (i.e. go to the AL and DH) since he's walking away from a contract before it expires.

Can I be the first to say Chipper Jones for hitting coach?

Dammit, I thought of that!! The ESPN article states that the Braves have something in mind for him after he retires. I know that Chipper had an interview with 680 a couple weeks ago, he said that when he retires, he wants to spend sometime with his family then get into coaching, preferrebly as a hitting instructor.

Wow.

Not surprised, but still sad to see a Braves legend hang it up.

I mentioned to some friends the other day that it'll be weird seeing him gone after seeing him play for so long. I remember as a kid watching him play in the World Series in '95 and now he's retiring. Great role model for all athletes. I hope we'll see him in Cooperstown soon.

Kobe has been with the Lakers since 96, I wonder if he gets to 20 seasons with them. He would have to play 4 more seasons to get there.
