Anyone have theories about why this wasn't called against JSU? At least it wasn't as far as I remember.

This was one of my favorite plays last year, getting the ball quickly to the edge to Jones or Dwyer with the quick pitch to the outside.

Don't get me wrong the TO is fun to watch as well as the dive when JD busts it up the middle. The planned QB drive is a nice looking play too with the back leading the way, but something about that speed pitch just seems to always either bust for a big play or open up the middle for Dwyer. It seemed that the middle was closed to us most of the game against JSU and the only thing we did to try and open it up was the TO.

I would have loved to see the speed pitch a couple of times.

Are you talking about the toss sweep? We use that more when we're at the goal line when we need 7-8 yards... I think we were just keeping it simple... I'm hoping to catch Clempsun off gaurd come Thursday.

I don't think CPJ wanted to show too much for the Clampets. CPJ is smart and crafty as a fox. Our future is very bright !!

Speed pitch, toss sweep, whatever you want to call it, and I'm pretty sure we used it last year a lot more than just the goal line, a lot of Roddy's big runs were on that play.

I remember seeing it at least once (I think the pitch went to AA). I don't recall seeing it as much as we did in a normal game last year.

So after watching some highlights from last year, I believe you are right. I think that there is a fine distinction between the toss sweep and the TO depending on when the pitch is made. Some of the runs I remember as a 'toss sweep' were actually TO plays where Nesbitt just pitched it early, so it looked like he was still near center.

I still think that enough wasn't done to get the middle open though. Maybe GT just missed Jones more than I thought they did against JSU.

Why are you so worried about "opening up the middle"? The point of the offense is to take what is there. If the defense wants to clog the middle, you go around or over them.

Who do you think our running back is, Knowshon Moreno???

If the strength of your team is shut down and you don't feel the need to try and open it back up then you are letting the defense dictate what you do. When you let them do that, they have the advantage.

And since you are keen on that cliche of 'take what is there', then I'll throw another cheesy cliche at you. You have to 'keep them honest' with the other plays so you can run the plays you want to run...not just 'taking what is there'.

And also you are helping to make my point. They WERE clogging the middle, and we weren't trying to go around them, which WOULD have opened up the middle again.

No, actually he is right. We have to have the THREAT of a FB dive. If they are devoting extra players to plug the middle, then counter options, seam routes, and the play you mentioned, the rocket toss will counter that move. Who cares if they choose to stop the dive? Dwyer can get it on a B-back option if we want to give him the ball. If they are stacking the middle every play, it makes it that much easier for Josh to pull the ball and hit the edge with Roddy or AA.
Also, if anyone else lines up with their corners 1 to 2 yards inside our WR's without even looking at them, we will pass for 250 that day. We had a lot of different ways we could have attacked them, but it's freaking Jacksonville State.

I think PJ was hoping to have a better executed game than we did. However, GT did win by 20, the game was never in doubt, and that gave them the ability to sit lots of players and limit the playbook. I was very dissappointed with the kicking game and was hoping for more from the D-line. But, I think this game was played in a manner that would be best for the entire season, not just the first game. It may look better to have won 62-10, but that probably will not help us beat Clemson. At least, this is what I am hoping is true.

We did throw it a little and we did take it outside as well. It was Jax State, not like we were going to do too much with the offense what with all the young guys getting a chance to play.
