Is it really common for offensive linemen to have problems with shoulder injuries and what kind of seriousness range do they cover? I only ask cause another former starting offensive lineman sat with a shoulder injury and the other one is sitting for the whole spring with a shoulder injury.

The problem with shoulders is once you hurt them, especially in season it's hard for them too heal. I tore my rotator cuff mid season in 94 and never was 100% again. Lots of pain pills and liquor got me through. Shoulder pads are much better these days than they were when I played.

What was harder for you...the shoulder pads...or the leather helmets? :laugher:

I asked this before. Does the cut blocking tend to increase shoulder injuries?

i would think no due to the type of motion it is. i would say that the likeliest type of blocking to sustain a shoulder injury would be pass blocking, since you are standing up and then using your arms to keep the defender in front of you

with your arm raised, all it takes is one well-placed blow for you to separate your shoulder or dislocate it. the shoulder joint is much more vulnerable when the arm is raised up.

so i would think that a team that does a lot of pass blocking would be more likely to have shoulder injuries than a team that blocks down

I think these things go in cycles. It seemed like knee injuries were much more common in the O'Leary days. Then under Chan and PJ, shoulder injuries have become more common.

There is one thing that I KNOW that we of the older persuasion could do that none of these players today can do.
We could fold up our leather helment and stick it inside our belt.
