The local ESPN outlet here in SW Florida reported today that Tennessee has floated a five million dollar a year five year trial balloon contract at current Tampa Bay Buc coach Jon "Chuckie" Gruden.

Gruden's wife is a UT grad, where he met her in 86 when he was an assistant there.

Per ESPN, the initial reaction from sources close to Gruden say that he has interest.

It would be interesting to see how the whole evolved "Chuckie" mystique plays in the SEC. Just imagine Spurrier and Gruden on opposite sides of the field, it brings to mind images of the classic head explosion in "Scanners"!

I heard John Kincade quote him yesterday saying that he has "0% interest" in going to UT.

Also, he's a big Notre Dame guy and wouldn't even entertain offers from them when they were looking.

I would believe this more if I thought his seat was getting hot in Tampa, but he is pretty comfortable there right now. I also don't see how he makes a good college coach, especially $5 large per year good.

He'll be interested in it long enough to get a raise out of the Bucs.

Chris Mortenson basically laughed at this idea on Mike and Mike. He said that Gruden is a gym rat and would not go anywhere that he can not do football 24/7. He also said he can't stand coaching rookies. Why would he then go coach college kids? He would not. He also said that rumor can already be put to rest.

In the SEC you have to do the rubber chicken circuit. Good luck with Chuckie doing that.

It would be an awful hire for UT. Gruden is the most over-rated coach in the NFL. His forte is on the offensive side of the ball, and TB's offense has sucked ever since he's been there. He won a Super Bowl with Monte Kiffin's defense and Tony Dungy's players. He's done jack since.

If I was a Tennessee fan, I'd be very glad that Gruden isn't interested.

Interesting, high profile kind of name that I hadn't thought of. Agreed that he's not going anywhere but interesting scuttlebutt nonetheless. I wonder what UT has in mind? My feeling is that they're going to go after something with 'sex appeal' rather than the Chan Gailey/good coach/great guy that you never heard of. Really havn't studied it. I'd think Muschamp would be on their radar but I still expect Awbun to run Tooberville off and bring him in. I'm thinking like a complete 180 from Fulmer and what's been going on there. Oh well. Big Orange.

I lived in Tn for umpteen years and those are some one more fanatics. I came this close to getting my ass kicked in a little watering hole just by mentioning in the course of conversation that I was a Tech fan. I'm talking bullet to the head kind of ass kicking. They weren't anti-Tech. They were anti-anybody that wasn't pulling for the Vols. I talked my way out of it with the "Bobby Dodd played at Tennessee" argument. I remember when they won the national championship you would've thought Obama had just lost the election. Good folks but for pete's sake respect the native customs.
